Uganda (officially the Republic of Uganda), is in East Africa. It is bordered on the east by Kenya, on the north by South Sudan and on the west by the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The southern part of the country includes a substantial portion of Lake Victoria, shared with Kenya and Tanzania, situating the country in the African Great Lakes region. The official language is English. Luganda, a central language, is widely spoken across the country, and multiple other languages are also spoken including Swahili. Uganda is one of the poorest nations in the world, with 37.7% of the population living on less than $1.25 a day. Uganda has the second highest birth rate in the world, however many of the children either die young or lose their parents early. According to UNICEF there are 2.7 million orphans in Uganda. Approximately 1.3 million of these children have been orphaned by AIDS.
In Uganda, like many African countries, familial and tribal ties are usually quite strong. Communities, families and friends are motivated to look after children in their surroundings who are in need of care and protection. Many of the Ugandan children who are not cared for by friends or family will remain in their country and be placed in foster homes where they can grow and be educated in their own community. Other true orphans can be matched with adoptive families in the U.S.
Our Work in Uganda
After five separate trips to Uganda, East Africa from early in 2013, OFY decided to no longer pursue our original efforts to become a primary adoption service provider. Our Executive Director, Mike Rush, did however establish meaningful and trusting relationships with several orphanages and ministries that are serving the vulnerable children and families in Uganda.
It is our ongoing mission to raise money and provide these funds to established and trusted organizations and ministries that are addressing the many needs of Uganda’s vulnerable children and their families.
OFY recently made donations to:
Ekisa Ministries for a new physiotherapy room that addresses the special needs of the children in their residential home on the outskirts Jinja, Uganda.
Nsambya Children’s Home to restock items in the Resettlement Program
